Both meteorological EPW data sets and material performances were gathered from a growing number of locally sourced meteorological stations and material suppliers respectively. This data was integrated into our scripts to provide a highly accurate 3D modelling scenario. Some of the more phenomenal aspects of this allowed us to determine a solar factor value for the whole system, according to 145 directions of incidence in the site’s hemisphere. In other words, the simulation of solar gain factored for each hour of daylight, every day of the year. In practice, the results highlighted problematic seasons, and illustrated the variability of solar factor over the circadian course of key dates (the Summer and Winter solstice).
Correspondingly, designers were provided with information to grasp the dynamics of peak solar gain with great accuracy. The findings also greatly aided design teams in determine the efficiency of the brise-soleil and therefore aided in refining an interior solar protection scheme that was fit for purpose. Other findings made good use of local EPW data to ensure that the irregularly shaped roof was also fit for drainage purposes.
